We are going to try to "Flip The Classroom" for this next project:
You are going to create a "Visual Pun" using the layer mask tool in Photoshop.
What is a Pun?
Pun- a play on words that use words with similar sounds but have different meanings.
Ex. Have you ever heard anyone call a bad joke a “cheesy joke”? Was it really cheesy?
Visual Pun- combining two or more symbols to form a new meaning
Here are some example of Visual Puns:
Corn Dog
Dr. Pepper
World Peas
For the first step, brainstorm some ideas for what your visual pun will be and collect possible pictures that you would like to use to create your visual puns.
Here are some more example to help you get started: (You can come up with your own too, you do not have to use one of these)
Fork in the Road
Watch Dog
Fan Club
Bookworm
Toothpick
Gatorade
Horseradish
Fire Man
Wisdom Tooth
Catfish
Couch Potato
Junk Food
Next, there are three video links below. For homework, I would like you to watch these three videos so you can get an idea of how the layer mask tool works in Photoshop.
Part 1: Basic Layer Mask Tutorial

Part 2: Introduction to Adjustment Layers

Using Gradients with Layer Mask:

Once you have watched all three videos, we will start to create your visual puns in class, using some or all of the techniques you learned in the video in addition to any other prior knowledge you have about using Photoshop.
